I am glad that Ms. Jackson is in the race and I thank her for her response to my open letter to mayoral candidates.

On February 22, 2008, after firing Doug Wilder I set out the qualities we need to have in our next mayor. http://jamesrivermaven.blogspot.com/2008/02/dougs-replacement.html

I mentioned several people who I thought would be a good replacement for Doug, but I did not include Jackie Jackson. Why? I didn't know that she still lived in Richmond.

Since this question will undoubtedly come up in the campaign, and since the citizens of Richmond have a right to know, I ask where does Jackie live? Last year she was a resident of Henrico County. In her biography for her campaign for the House of Delegates seat in the 74th district it says, "Jackie lives in Henrico County's Fairfield District with her German Sheppard, Cocoa, and Golden Retriever, Georgie. Jackie is an active member of the Henrico County Democratic Committee." This year, as a candidate for mayor of Richmond, Jackie's biography indicates that she still lives with Cocoa and Georgie but now lives in Richmond.

Before Jackie has a right to call on the citizens of Richmond to support her candidacy, she needs to explain why she seems to change her residency to match the office she wishes to run for.

Bert, thank you for your post. I went back read your full post "Doug's replacement". You listed some excellent qualities all of which I have proven record of. You also mentioned that you have only been in Richmond for a short time, so you may not know that I served the City 2 years on the Richmond School Board and I served the City 4 years on Richmond City Council, and served as Vice President of City Council. It may not be known that I was the lone voice for our children when the meals tax proposals hit our docket. I believed then, as I do now, that we must make our schools and our children a priority. I led the effort to add accountability to the Richmond School system by introducing a performance based contract for the superintendent that would be based on results and deliverables; things that we in corporate america face daily. I have pushed for that accountability at all levels of government. Serving the citizens is a privilege.

While serving the 8th district, I established the 8th district advisory council to bring together the district because we were divided. We needed to be united in order to move the district forward. This same type of thought is needed to bring together school administration, city administration, parents, teachers, students and yes, the business community.

Taking public office at 29 was certainly a life changing event. It demonstrated to me and allowed me to show others, that you can break the cycle. Being born to a 17 year old senior in high school, statistics had me following the same path. And many of our young people feel and think the same. But I am here to encourage them and others to get in the race, get involved in your community, WE all need to do our part in order to improve our great City. As a registered voter in the 2nd district, duly qualified to seek the office of Mayor, bringing experience, energy and excellence, I offer you a new voice, a new choice for the next generation of leadership. One who will eliminate the business as usual mindset, one who will eliminate the business as usual politics, one who will stand with you, if you stand with me as we Reclaim Richmond.
